The CPCU Society recognizes March as Ethics Awareness Month.  The Society helps its members and their companies ensure success by encouraging excellence through ethical behavior, continuing education and leadership opportunities.  This year, the Presque Isle CPCU Society Chapter teamed up with local area schools to promote Ethics Awareness Month.

The Chapter was awarded first place amongst all participating CPCU Society chapters for their creativity, community involvement, and overall impact with their approach for promoting awareness about the importance of Ethics in the insurance industry and in our every day lives.  Click here to go to our Photo Gallery to see pictures of the award and proud chapter officers and members who were on hand to receive the award at the annual CPCU Society Leadership Meeting held in Baltimore, MD the weekend of April 22nd.  Congratulations and thank you to all those who participated making this a huge success!  Read more below about the Chapter's Ethics activities.

“Rooted” in Ethics

To raise awareness, local members designed, created and displayed an “Ethics Tree” which was a collection of thoughts and impressions from local students in elementary, middle, high school and college, along with adult professionals from the Presque Isle Chapter, describing what ethics means to them.

The bottom of the tree is decorated with the younger students’ ideas, which builds the foundation for ethical behavior and thinking.  Our thinking and behavior continue to mature, grow and branch out as we go through life.  This journey is represented by the thoughts from the middle school, high school to college age students.  The tree ends with thoughts from the local Presque Isle Chapter members.

The tree depicts how our values develop and grow as we get older and was a great way to engage the local community in honoring Ethics Awareness Month.

The Ethics Tree will remain on display through the month of March in the cafe’ at the Home Office of Erie Insurance, which is located in Erie, PA.  This is yet another way the Chapter was able to reach out to a much larger audience to build awareness about this important topic.

“Ethics in Insurance”

The Presque Isle Chapter also promoted Ethics Awareness Month amongst its members with Attorney / Professor Terry Holmes from Gannon University who spoke at the Chapter meeting Wednesday, March 15th.  The presentation topic was “Ethics in Insurance” and focused on non-ethical behaviors in the insurance industry.  Attorney Holmes has handled over 6,000 legal cases setting precedent in two areas in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.  He has also worked for seven different higher education institutions over a span of twenty years and is currently an Associate Professor at Gannon University.  In 2009, Terry was licensed to sell insurance by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).  One of Terry’s fondest memories was being assigned dignitary protection detail with The Secret Service during the 1988 Presidential Campaign guarding President Reagan as a Special Agent.
