If you’ve watched the news recently, you may have seen that our country is in crisis – a currency crisis!
It seems that businesses are running out of coin currency to make change on cash sales. Being a good American with a half-full coffee can of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, I cashed it in at the credit union - $59.98. On the drive home, many thoughts came to mind… Did my $60 worth of coins change anything? Did I make a difference? I can’t be the only one holding change – WHERE’S ALL THE CHANGE?
Do you recall our January chapter meeting when Erin Siegrist charged us to “Be the change you’re looking for!” The Presque Isle CPCU Chapter has volunteer opportunities to get us back into circulation and to bring value to our fellow chapter members and our community. YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Social and Networking: We are looking for committee members to create and plan fun events! Help us to spend a robust budget on social and networking events for our chapter – social distancing, of course!
Diversity and Inclusion – Mentoring: In 2019, Mercyhurst University started a local chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, a national, co-ed, insurance & risk management professional fraternity. It is a National CPCU mission to support this business club. We have reached out to them and they have asked for guidance in the form of one-to-one mentoring and soft-skills training. Mentoring would involve a monthly contact during the course of the school year. This could be as easy as a phone call. Also, are you good at being an interviewer? Have you seen a fair share of resumes? These are just a couple topics that the students have asked us for our help on as group presentations (think TED-Talks). Results of a recent PICPCU survey show that half of our current chapter membership will be retired within the next ten years. We have a duty to inspire the next generation that will follow us. To pass on our insight and experience is actually the greatest reflection of our own careers just as others have encouraged us to succeed.
Scholarship – Raffles: Are you good at math? Do you like games? We’re looking for you! We need your help to develop raffles as fundraisers for our scholarship program. Our chapter currently offers two $1,000 scholarships each year. The Board has discussed increasing the number and/or amount of scholarships, but only if we can properly fund the increase. Take a chance on yourself and volunteer!
ELECTION 2020: Being Americans, we are tasked to vote for President every four years. But with the PICPCU, every year is an election year! In October, we will be calling for nominations for positions of Secretary and Director. The Secretary position will ascend into the roles of Treasurer, President-Elect and President. Director is an elected two-year, executive board position. A Director’s role is to review and advise on chapter strategic goals and work towards implementing those goals. Any PICPCU member in good standing with the chapter can be nominated for either position. You can nominate yourself, too. Please consider placing your name up for election! The mission of the CPCU Society is education, empowerment and engagement. Holding either position is the fullest embodiment of being a CPCU!
Please contact Michael A Baker or Molly Hess if you have any interest in volunteering. You truly are investing in yourself as you become the change that you are looking for in our community and CPCU!
